Keeping Children Safe Down East
Keeping Children Safe Down East is a Safe Start Initiative in rural Washington County, Maine.  Our purpose is to reduce the impact of violence in the lives of our youngest children between birth and age six.  We are one of eleven pilot sites funded by the federal Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).  Safe Start is administered in Washington County by the Maine Department of Human Services, the Washington Hancock Community Agency and the Regional Medical Center at Lubec.  The five-year initiative runs through October, 2005.

As but one part of this initiative, Family Counseling Services provides a behavioral health screening for children ages zero to six who have been witness or party to violence.  These services are offered twice a week, once in Calais and once in Machias by our masters level clinicians who have training, supervision and experience with this set of issues and age group.  And, these services have been arranged to address the most pressing need outlined by Keeping Children Safe Down East - providing thorough and immediate assessment of a child's needs.
